Apple Prints

Apple Prints craft idea

Activity: Apple Prints

apple-prints

The first days of school are an exciting time to reflect on your child’s growth and capture a few memories while you’re at it. Use your kindergartener’s handprint to create a sweet and personalized apple craft. He will practice his cutting skills and color recognition while building anticipation for the first day of school. His little hands will grow, but you can keep this memory forever.

Grade -Kindergarten
Subject- Arts & Crafts

What You Need:

  • Construction paper
  • Red, green and yellow paint
  • Paintbrush
  • Scissors

What You Do:

1- Draw an apple shape onto a large piece of white construction paper. Help your child cut it out.
2- What color is an apple? Are they always red, or do they come in different colors? Let your child choose a color to paint his apple. Give him a paintbrush or let him use his hands for an extra sensory experience.
3- Help your child cut out a small rectangle of brown construction paper for the apple stem. Let him glue it to the top of his apple.
4- Help your child trace his hand on a sheet of green paper or make a handprint on white paper with green paint. This will be the leaf at the top of the apple. Help him cut out the handprint and glue it to the side of the stem.
5- Extend your learning by comparing and contrasting apples. Go to the grocery store and find red, yellow, and green apples. Buy one of each and have an apple tasting at home. Compare and contrast the shape, color, and taste of each apple. Which one does your child like the best? Which does he like the least? Let each family member taste each apple and decide on a favorite. Make a graph of the information. Which apple does your family like the most? What about the least? Graphs are a great way to discuss more versus less with your kindergartener. Who knew math could be so tasty?
